Learn English by reading the classics in the original

The best way to learn English through real books and audio - from Beatrix Potter to Sherlock Holmes, graded so every page is within reach.

Courses drill you on grammar you'll forget by Friday. Real books do something better: they show you English at work - the phrasal verbs, the idioms, the natural word order - inside stories you actually want to finish. Reading Alice in Wonderland or a Sherlock Holmes case teaches you more usable English than a stack of worksheets.

typereader turns any of those books into a lesson. Don't know a word? Tap it and keep reading. Want it to stick? Save it and review it later. Want to hear it? Play the synced audio. You move forward through the story instead of stalling on every unfamiliar phrase.

What you get

Tap any word for an instant meaning

English is full of tricky idioms and phrasal verbs that no dictionary lookup should interrupt your reading for. Tap any word in Dickens or Conan Doyle for an instant translation and stay inside the story.

Build a personal dictionary that lasts

Words you save from Mark Twain or Jane Austen enter spaced-repetition review and come back right before you'd forget them. Export to Anki anytime to study your own words your own way.

Read by typing - attention that pays off

Type the text as you read and English spelling, articles, and word order stop slipping past you - active recall makes the language stick far better than passive skimming. Optional, and easy to switch on when you want it.

Synced audiobooks train your ear

Hear each sentence read aloud with the current word highlighted, so English stress and connected speech start to make sense. Reading and listening reinforce each other on the same page.

AI grammar help in plain terms

Wondering why it's "had been going" or when to use the present perfect? Ask about the exact sentence you're reading and get a clear explanation, no jargon.

Every book graded A1 to C1

Start with Aesop's fables or Peter Rabbit, move up to Tom Sawyer and Sherlock Holmes, then read Austen and Dickens at C1. 1,300+ classics in four languages, and it works offline as an installable app.

Start at your level

Begin where you can actually follow the story. At A1–A2, Aesop's fables, Beatrix Potter, and short graded tales give you everyday words in short sentences. At B1–B2, Alice in Wonderland, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and Sherlock Holmes keep you hooked while you learn. At C1, read Pride and Prejudice or Great Expectations as they were written. The CEFR label on each book means you never pick something far above your level by accident.

FAQ

Can I learn English by reading books?

Yes. Reading gives you comprehensible input - English you can mostly understand - which is one of the most reliable ways to grow vocabulary and absorb grammar naturally. typereader adds instant word translations, spaced-repetition review of the words you save, and synced audio, so reading also strengthens your listening and recall.

What English level should I start reading at?

Match the book to your CEFR level. Beginners (A1–A2) should start with fables and simple graded stories; intermediate learners (B1–B2) can enjoy Tom Sawyer or Sherlock Holmes; advanced learners (C1) can read Austen or Dickens in the original. On typereader every book is labelled A1 to C1 so you can choose one you'll understand most of.

Is typereader free to use?

Yes, typereader is completely free and has no ads. You get the full English catalogue of 330+ public-domain books, tap-to-translate on every word, spaced-repetition review, and synced audio where recordings exist.

Which classic English books are best for learners?

Great choices include Aesop's Fables and The Tale of Peter Rabbit for beginners; Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes for intermediate readers; and Pride and Prejudice and Great Expectations for advanced readers. All are public-domain works available on typereader.

How does reading help me speak English?

Reading builds the vocabulary and sentence patterns you later reuse when speaking, and typereader's synced audio lets you hear correct pronunciation and rhythm as you read. Saving and reviewing words with spaced repetition means they're available when you need them in conversation.
